Obama Taps Colin Powell as a Top Advisor

Colin Powell, a four-star general and President Bush’s former secretary of state, will have a role as a top presidential adviser in an Obama administration, Barack Hussein Obama reported today (2008-10-20).

“He will have a role as one of my advisers”, Obama said on NBC’s “Today” in an interview aired this morning, a day after Powell endorsed him. “Whether he wants to take a formal role, whether that’s a good fit for him, is something we’d have to discuss”, Obama added.

Being a top presidential adviser, especially on foreign policy, would be familiar ground to Powell on a subject that’s relatively new to the freshman Illinois senator. Obama has struggled to establish his foreign policy credentials against GOP candidate John McCain … who is a decorated military veteran … a former prisoner of war … and a ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

In the NBC interview, Obama admitted that Powell did not give him any advance notice before he crossed party lines and endorsed the democratic presidential candidate on the network’s “Meet the Press” yesterday.

Sunday the republican Powell endorses Obama for President stating that one of his chief reasons for backing the democrat candidate was McCain and Palin’s negative campaign ads. Apparently, he has not seen Obama’s campaign ads against McCain. He must not have listened to any of Obama’s recent speeches either. Now, one day later, Obama taps Powell as a top adviser.

For the election, these maneuvers have had little impact as McCain continues to narrow the poll gap with Obama. The significance of this story, it seems, is that Obama is starting to align his career with men of a more honorable stature than in his earlier political days.
